The church prior to work begining. The horizontal erosion of the stonework is quite evident and is caused mainly by soft clay beds within the stone slowly eroding and the inclusion of iron cramps. This damage was similar on all four elevations Damage was more pronounced on the buttresses, mainly due to their severe exposure to the elements Again stone laid out of its natural bed has sheared off. Also damage from iron cramps can be seen above and to the left of the missing finial. The mullions are cracked due to the stone being laid out of its natural bed, these were down for replacement. The decorative finial was also edge bedded and a vertical crack can clearly be seen running up the middle of the stone. These were carefully taken off site and pinned back together.
